A ute that can run power tools, keep a fridge cold and move silently around site changes more than the drivetrain. It changes what belongs on the tray, under the bonnet and inside the cab. The future of electric ute accessories is not about adding gadgets for the sake of it. It is about building tougher, smarter and properly integrated setups for Australian work, touring and off-road use.

Electric utes and plug-in hybrids are arriving with different battery layouts, payload figures, charging hardware and factory electrical systems. That means the old approach of bolting on accessories first and sorting out the wiring later will not cut it. The best builds will start with how the ute is actually used - on site from Monday to Friday, loaded for camp on Saturday, or both.

Electric Ute Accessories Will Be Built Around Power

For diesel utes, accessory power has usually meant a dual-battery system, DC-DC charger, solar panel and a quality 12V battery. That setup still has a place, but an electric ute brings another layer to consider: the vehicle’s high-voltage battery and its factory power outlets.

Some models offer vehicle-to-load power, often called V2L. This can supply 240V power for tools, lighting, a fridge or camp equipment without firing up a generator. The trade-off is that factory V2L outlets have limits. Their output, operating conditions and battery draw vary between vehicles. Canopies, Roller Covers and Aerodynamics

Range matters more when every extra kilometre helps. That puts more attention on the airflow around tray accessories. A well-designed roller cover or canopy can protect gear and create a clean, integrated finish. Poorly matched roof loads, oversized light bars and bulky external mounts can add drag, wind noise and extra energy use at highway speeds.

This does not mean electric ute owners need bare trays. It means accessory choice needs to be deliberate. Low-profile roof racks, vehicle-specific canopies and properly positioned lighting can provide serious function without turning the ute into a wind brake.

For tradies, a secure roller cover may be the best balance of fast access, weather protection and lower profile. For long-range touring, a canopy with internal shelving, fridge provision and roof-load capability may still be the better fit. The intended job decides the build.

Protection Will Need to Respect Sensors and Cooling

Electric utes are packed with cameras, radar modules, parking sensors and driver-assistance technology. They can also have cooling systems positioned differently from conventional utes. That changes how bullbars, nudge bars, grille trims, underbody guards and lighting brackets need to be designed and fitted.

A quality bullbar remains a practical upgrade for regional driving, work sites and touring areas where animal strikes are a real risk. But it must be compatible with the vehicle’s safety systems and allow proper operation of sensors, cameras and airbags. Cheap universal-fit hardware is a poor match for a ute carrying this much technology.

Underbody protection will also become more valuable. Battery housings are engineered to be tough, but rough tracks, washouts and loose rocks are unforgiving. A plate that looks tough but traps mud or blocks cooling can create problems down the track.

Charging Gear Will Become Part of the Touring Setup

Electric ute touring will not be limited to the city fringe, but it will require better route planning. Accessories that support charging stops, campsite power management and gear security will become part of the normal conversation.

Portable charging equipment, weatherproof cable storage and lockable compartments for leads and adapters will be increasingly useful. The best future builds will be organised, not overloaded. A ute owner should be able to find a tool, recover the vehicle, run a light or pack for a weekend away without unloading half the tray.

Expect more integrated drawer systems with removable dividers, slide-out work surfaces, lockable electrical compartments and tailored mounts for compressors, fire extinguishers and recovery gear. Interior protection, seat covers and console organisers will matter too, especially for crews moving between muddy sites and daily driving.

Lighting will also become more targeted. Instead of simply fitting the biggest possible light bar, owners will use efficient work lights around canopies, rear-facing tray lights, scene lighting for camp and driving lights selected for the roads they actually travel. LEDs draw less power than older lighting, but correct wiring, switching and beam placement still matter.
