Start with Ratings, Not Accessories

Before choosing a hitch, brake controller or towing mirrors, check the figures on the vehicle compliance information and owner’s manual. The headline braked towing capacity is only one limit. You also need to work within the vehicle’s gross vehicle mass, gross combination mass, maximum towball download, axle ratings and the trailer’s aggregate trailer mass.

A common mistake is assuming a ute rated to tow a certain amount can do so with a fully loaded tray, canopy, drawers, tools, passengers and a big towball load. In practice, payload disappears quickly. A steel canopy, drawer system, fridge and work gear can place substantial weight behind the rear axle before the trailer is even connected.

The usable rating is always limited by the lowest-rated component in the chain. That includes the towbar, hitch receiver, ball mount or tongue, coupling, safety chains, shackles where applicable, and trailer connection hardware. A high-rated towbar does not make an undersized ball mount or worn coupling safe.

Measure with the vehicle loaded as it will be when towing, not empty in the driveway. A ute carrying tools or touring gear can sit very differently once the real load is onboard. Adjustable ball mounts can be useful where you tow more than one trailer, but they must be rated for the intended load and installed correctly.

Trailer Brakes and Brake Controllers

Trailer brakes are where towing safety becomes much more than a mechanical connection. For many heavier trailers, electric brakes and a suitable in-cab controller are essential.

Do not ignore the trailer breakaway system where it is required. Its battery, switch and cable need regular inspection. Towing gear is only useful when it works on the day it is needed.

Visibility, Wiring and Reversing Confidence

A trailer changes your blind spots immediately. If the trailer is wider than the vehicle or blocks your rearward vision, suitable extension towing mirrors can make lane changes, overtaking and reversing far less stressful. Look for stable, vehicle-compatible mirrors that do not shake badly at highway speed.

Lighting deserves the same attention. Check every function before each trip: indicators, brake lights, tail lights, reverse lights where fitted, number plate illumination and trailer brake connection. A quality trailer socket with a secure mount helps protect the plug from vibration, water and accidental damage around worksites.

A reversing camera can be one of the most practical towing upgrades on a modern ute. It will not replace mirrors or a spotter, but it gives you a clearer view of the coupling when lining up and helps when manoeuvring in tight campsites, driveways and job sites. If your ute has factory sensors and cameras, fitment should preserve their operation rather than create warning faults or blind spots.

Weight Distribution Hitches: Useful, Not Universal

A weight distribution hitch can improve stability on certain heavy trailer setups by transferring some load back towards the front axle and trailer axle. It may help when a high towball download causes rear-end sag, vague steering or poor headlight aim.

It is not automatically the right answer for every ute and trailer. Some trailer couplings, off-road trailers and vehicle manufacturers place limits on their use. Suspension changes, towbar design, trailer construction and the way the load is packed all affect suitability. Protect the Ute While Keeping It Practical

Towing often exposes weaknesses in storage and vehicle protection. Loose straps, hitch pins, adaptors, gloves and trailer plugs quickly become hard to find when they are rolling around in the tub. A lockable toolbox, drawer system or well-organised canopy keeps essential gear dry, secure and ready to use.

For touring, separate towing equipment from recovery equipment. A rated recovery point and recovery kit are for vehicle recovery, not automatically for trailer connection or towing. Likewise, a towball is not a recovery point. Using gear outside its intended purpose risks equipment failure and serious injury.

A roller cover or canopy can also improve security for tools and towing gear, but consider access.
